How it works
Built around the task
Point of Use Libraries let administrators group SDSs by task or by storage spot, so each area of the facility has its own list of the products actually used there.
Each Point of Use Library gets its own QR code and web link. Anyone who scans it sees only the SDSs for that spot, with no login required. A product can appear in as many libraries as you need, and when its SDS is updated, every library that includes it shows the current version automatically.
Administrators decide what each library holds and adjust it as processes change.
Regulatory Compliance
OSHA HazCom
OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) requires employers to keep SDSs readily accessible to employees in their work area during every shift, and to train employees on where those sheets are kept and how to use them. A site library with hundreds of entries can meet the access requirement on paper, yet a worker searching through it after a splash is losing time.
Point of Use Libraries put the SDSs for a specific task next to the hazard itself. Training becomes more concrete too, because you can show a new hire the code on their own cabinet and the exact sheets behind it.
WHMIS
WHMIS requires employers to make SDSs readily available to workers who may be exposed to a hazardous product, and worker education must cover the products those workers handle along with how to find their SDS information.
Point of Use Libraries match that product-specific approach. Each library lists what workers at that station actually use, so education sessions can be run at the workstation with the real products and the real QR code. The full location library stays available for your joint health and safety committee or representative.
COSHH
COSHH assessments are built around the substances used in specific tasks (Regulation 6), and Regulation 12 requires employers to give workers suitable information, including access to the relevant safety data sheets.
A Point of Use Library can mirror each assessment. Build one for the task, post its QR code at the workstation, and anyone doing that job can open the SDSs for the substances involved. When the assessment changes, update the library and the posted code shows the new list straight away. Agency staff and contractors scan the same code as permanent employees.
ISO 45001
ISO 45001 asks organizations to identify hazards across routine and non-routine activities (clause 6.1.2) and to keep documented information available and suitable for use where and when it is needed (clause 7.5.3).
Point of Use Libraries connect those two requirements. The hazards you identify for a task are reflected in the SDSs posted at that task, and administrators manage every version centrally, so the sheet at the workstation is always the approved one. Access data showing which libraries are opened most also gives you useful evidence for management review.
Implementation
How it works in your facility
Rolling out Point of Use Libraries starts with a walk of the floor. Note where chemicals are stored or used for specific jobs, then build a library for each spot in sdsLite by selecting the products kept there.
Every library comes with a shelf label carrying its own QR code. Print it and place it on the cabinet door or beside the equipment where the work happens. If the area has a shared computer, your IT team can add the library's URL as a desktop shortcut.
